The dogs pictured on the front page of the Register & Bee and on their website are NOT dogs seized from Mr. Chittum. The dogs pictured have been returned to their owner.

Discounted Spay/Neuters at the
South Central Spay/Neuter Clinic.

The DAHS is transporting pets to Evington, VA to allow people to take advantge of the discounted spays and neuters.  Costs range from $65 for a female dog to $35 for a male cat.  Vaccinations are available at the time of surgery for $8.  They can also do Feline combo FIV/FeLv or Canine heartworm antigen tests for $14.  Call the shelter at 434-799-5306 for more information about transportation for your dog or cat.

Planned Pethood Clinic in Rocky Mount, Virginia also offers low cost spay/neuter surgury for dogs and cats.  Call 540-489-3491 for more information.

In our ongoing effort to help the community help the animals, we provide many services including:

The shelter is open to the public from 12:00 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The adoption areas are open on Saturday by appointment. The shelter is closed on Sundays. The shelter telephone number is (434) 799-0843.

Drop-off cages are available after-hours, but we request that you call the phone numbers on the cages. An employee will be dispatched to take the animal inside. The cages are supplied with blankets, food, and

water for the animal’s temporary comfort.

For after-hour emergencies, please call (434) 799-5111 for the City and (434) 432-7937 for the County. Officers will be dispatched to help the injured animal.

 

If you wish to volunteer at the shelter, please call us at  (434) 799-0843.  We need help walking dogs, playing with kittens, and anything thing else you may wish to help us out with
